Another Democrat Lie

In recent weeks the White House has been pushing a new argument about the economy: "We didn’t know how bad it was."  President Obama used this line Tuesday in an interview with KIRO in Seattle, saying that he wished he understood just how deep the economic problems were when he took office. Obama said: “I think we understood that it was bad but we didn’t know how bad it was.” He added: “I think I could have prepared the American people for how bad this was going to be had we had a sense of that.”

So, was Barack Obama surprised by the seriousness of the economic problems in 2008, as he now claims?

In a word: No.

On September 28, 2008, in the first head-to-head debate with John McCain, Obama said: “We are going through the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression.” He called it “a defining moment in our history.”

A post on the Obama administration’s transition page said that the United States “faces its most serious economic crisis since the great depression.” 

“Our country faces its most serious economic crisis since the great depression. Working families, who saw their incomes decline by $2,000 in the economic ‘expansion’ from 2000 to 2007, now face even deeper income losses. Retirement savings accounts have lost $2 trillion. Markets have fallen 40% in less than a year. Millions of homeowners who played by the rules can't meet their mortgage payments and face foreclosure as the value of their homes have plummeted. With credit markets nearly frozen, businesses large and small cannot access the credit they need to meet payroll and create jobs.”

If Obama was exaggerating, others believed him. The depth of the recession was widely reported when Obama was elected. On November 5, one day after the election, Agence France Presse reported that “Obama faces the biggest global crisis since the 1930s Great Depression and a host of domestic economic ills, including rising unemployment, falling home values and deeply shaken confidence when he takes office on January 20.” An analysis by the Associated Press sounded a similar note, arguing “the president-elect must immediately confront the worst economic conditions since the 1930s Great Depression.” The Boston Globe called it “the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression.” A memo from the Obama-friendly Center for American Progress called the situation “perhaps the most daunting economic challenge faced by a new president since the Great Depression.”

Why would Obama say something so easily refuted? Perhaps he’s simply hoping the media won’t call him on it – a reasonable expectation. Or maybe he’s hoping for the opposite – that the media will call him on his current mendacity and, as a consequence, remind voters just how bad the economy was when he came to office. Who knows?

Either way, the White House’s current claim that it was unaware of the depth of the economic problems is not true.  In other words, another Democrat lie.

Insurance Companies To Provide “Free” Benefits

Excuse me!  When did you last hear of any insurance company providing “free” anything?  If your experience has been at all like mine, it’s difficult to get an insurance company to pay for the benefits which are actually set forth in their policy at the time you enroll or purchase it.  At the next renewal period, you can generally look forward to cuts in “benefits” and hikes in premiums.  Guess what … if our government is successful in mandating that insurance companies must cover the cost of birth control, it won’t be free!!   Any guesses who will pay for it?  NO?  Try you and me and everyone else, whether they like it or not, because nobody can afford to provide goods and services for free.

Yet free birth control is just what the Obama administration now says everyone is entitled to since an outraged public has forced them to back off their plan to trample the First Amendment to our constitution.   The Catholic Church is outraged over this latest attempt to jamb Obama’s birth control policies down the throat of the church against their religious views.  By the way, it’s not about health care.  If anyone needs birth control, it is already easy enough for them to obtain it at any pharmacy in the country at reasonable and affordable cost.  Yes, their cost.  What it is about is stopping the current administration from expanding its already excessive powers in flagrant disregard for our constitution.  It is therefore not simply an issue for Catholics.  It is an issue for every citizen and every religion in this country, regardless of their views on birth control because, if the current administration can get away with this, it will overrun every other religion and person holding a divergent point of view from that held by “the government” on any subject.

Our nation’s founding fathers specifically added the first ten amendments to our constitution during the constitutional ratification process specifically because they were fearful of creating a government which was not specifically limited in its powers and which might, in pursuit of its own self-interests, govern in a manner which was contrary to our Declaration of Independence which reads in part as follows:

“…We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. That to secure these rights, governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed. …”

Clearly, the current administration considers itself exempt.  I can cite numerous examples, can you? 

By the way, nowhere in our constitution does it say that anyone is entitled to free birth control or free health care.  If you want birth control and health care, you pay for it!  Don’t expect someone else to cover the cost!

Exposing Liberal Lies

Over the last several decades, the liberals (now calling themselves “progressives”) have become increasingly adept at spinning the issues and redefining perceptions to their advantage while conservatives have failed repeatedly to expose their liberal lies and distortions.  With the presidential election cycle now in full swing, I thought it appropriate to provide some hard facts in response to some of their claims.

This is the first in a planned series of “daylight” exposures I’ll be sending you from time to time over the next several months.  Feel free to discuss and share them with others and to delve deeper if any of them really perk your interest.  I’ll provide sources of reference.

With all the recent “OCCUPY” protests so much in the news, I thought the following might be appropriate:

Claim #1 – “Republicans are the party of the rich corporate special interests.”

Fact – In the 2008 presidential election cycle, the top 100 donors to the major political parties gave overwhelmingly to Democrats!

All the numbers are for the 2008 election cycle and are based on data released by the FEC on July 13, 2009.

The short story - The organizations listed here were the biggest donors to federal candidates and political parties in the election cycle. The numbers combine all PAC, soft money (for the 2008 election cycle and before), and large ($200+) individual contributions made by the organization, its employees, officers and their immediate families. Subsidiaries and affiliates are also included in the totals. Not included is money spent independently on issue ads or donations to political party conventions, legal defense funds, presidential inaugurations or post-election recount funds.
